Unclaimed Money: Learn How to Find Unclaimed Cash for You

Unclaimed Money: 12 Sources of Forgotten Funds

Most unclaimed money is held by the states – about $32 billion at last count. That's because state law requires banks, brokerage firms and other companies that handle people's money to turn unclaimed funds over to the states for safekeeping if they can't locate the rightful owners. So the states are the place to begin your search.
But don't stop there!
The federal government has its own "buried treasure" that you can find, too. And some private entities also have helpful tools for you to try. All but one below are free. If you are asked to pay a large flat fee or a percentage of theunclaimed money you find, you are probably dealing with a professional "finder." It is never necessary to pay a fee or finder for information you can quickly look up on your own.
Below are a dozen different sources you can search to find your own forgotten money.
1. Your State
The first place you should search is your home state. Unclaimed money is usually -- though not always -- held by the state where the account was originally located. Things like abandoned safety deposit boxes, uncashed overtime checks, and forgotten apartment security deposits. The National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators (NAUPA), a non-profit association that represents unclaimed money departments from all 50 states plus the District of Columbia, runs a free website that will link you to any state you want to search. You will find it HERE.
The best part is that you can search for yourself or others without even entering a Social Security or account number Rather, you search the system by name and then verify that it's really you by checking to see if you have ever lived at the corresponding address listed. (IMPORTANT: For those who want to go back to the site later on their own, please note that it is a .ORG site, NOT a .com site. www.unclaimed.ORG.)
2. Other States
Unclaimed money is usually held in the state where the account was originally located, so if you have lived in multiple states, you will want to search all of them. Additionally, in some instances, unclaimed money is held by the state where the business is headquartered. If you are fairly certain that you lost track of money, you could look up where the company is based and search that state. But in the last decade, so many banks and brokerage firms have bought each other or merged that it's often hard to trace.
So here's the solution: There's another free website where you can search 37 states and the District of Columbia all at once. (Not all states participate.) That free site is HERE. When you first search, you are prompted to enter your home state. After that, you have the opportunity to search again. This time choose "all states and provinces" on the drop-down menu. Be sure to look at the map of which states participate, located HERE. If you have lived in one that does not, go back to unclaimed.ORGand search it individually there. To cover your bases for company headquarters, you might choose to search all 13 states that don't participate individually.
3. Local Governments
Some states require local governments to turn unclaimed money over to them, but others do not. So another lucrative source of unclaimed funds is your city, county, town or village. I know of no centralized repository of information about these locally held funds, so you'll want to do some sleuthing on the Internet. Try different combinations of keywords, like, "Town of (your town name)" and "unclaimed property." Keep in mind that governments usually refer to unclaimed money as unclaimed property, but they don't typically mean real estate. They mean money.
For more details about finding money held by local jurisdictions, click HERE.
4. The Treasury Department
The Treasury Department's Bureau of Public Debt is holding billions of dollars worth of what it calls "matured, unredeemed savings bonds." In other words, unclaimed savings bonds! You can see how they'd get lost, since they typically take 30 years to mature. Fortunately, the Treasury Department has embraced the Internet with a website, HERE, where you can search for forgotten bonds that belong to you and are no longer earning interest. You should search using your Social Security number or, if the savings bond was a gift, you should also check the Social of the person who gave it to you. Often, those who give savings bonds as presents don't know the Social Security number of the person they are giving it to, so they use their own. If you find a bond in your name, you can then begin the claims process right online. A federal worker will then contact you and complete the process over the phone and by mail.
For additional advice about collecting unclaimed savings bonds, click HERE.
5. The FDIC
As you know, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, or FDIC, insures banks. That means if the bank goes under, the FDIC makes sure all depositors get their money back. (There's currently a $250,000 limit.) This is a tremendously consumer-friendly system developed after the Great Depression in an effort to give people the confidence to deposit money in banks rather than stuffing it in their mattresses. If you didn't collect your money when your bank failed, you should contact the FDIC ASAP! If you are correct, the FDIC will be holding your money and will return it to you. The best part? You can check right this second, by using the FDIC's search website located HERE.
6. The National Credit Union Administration
Similar to the FDIC, the National Credit Union Administration takes possession of credit union funds when credit unions fail. The NCUA is a federal agency, not to be confused with the Credit Union National Association, an industry group. Once again, the feds are on it, and have set up a website where credit union customers can search for their forgotten funds. Click HERE to track down your money.
7. The IRS
We love to joke about how we hate the Internal Revenue Service, but you could learn to love the IRS if you were expecting a tax refund and never received it. To give you an idea, in 2012 the IRS announced that 111,893 citizens had not received their refund checks for a total of more than $16 million. Are you one of them? The IRS now provides a "Where's my Refund?" feature on its website. You can look up your missing check by entering the amount you are owed, plus your Social Security number.
For advice on how to search for unclaimed child support money, click HERE.
8. Fair Housing Administration
If you purchased your home with an FHA-insured mortgage, you may be owed a refund and have no idea! It can happen if you paid a lump sum for your FHA insurance premium at closing, but were also charged for it monthly. Another scenario: Maybe you started with an FHA loan but then refinanced into a conventional loan. Beware: The refund money is not held indefinitely. According to the rules, HUD can keep your refund if you don't claim it within six years. So, you better get on this one! HEREis the link to the HUD/FHA page to search. You can search using your name or your FHA case number.
9. The Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation
If you are due a pension, but have not received it, first you should contact the company where you were employed. If the company no longer exists, there is a little known federal agency, the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC), that safeguards private pensions. You can try to track down your pension HERE on the PBGC website.
10. The Employee Benefits Security Administration
The Employee Benefits Security Administration (EBSA), is the federal agency charged with making sure retirement money is reunited with its rightful owners. Unlike the PBGC, the EBSA typically gets involved in cases of wrongdoing where a company has misappropriated employees' pension accounts. The EBSA sometimes even sues to seize retirement money before it disappears. You can utilize the agency's services by clicking HERE.
For warnings about unclaimed money scams, click HERE.
11. Former Employers
In this day and age, pensions are increasingly rare, and 401(k) plans have taken over. You have the right to roll over your 401(k) to your new company or into another retirement investment like an IRA, but in the flurry of changing employers many people forget. So if you have left behind a 401(k), it's time to search for it. Fortunately, companies that administer 401(k) plans have teamed up to create a search engine you can use to track down your 401(k).
12. MIB Solutions
Typically unpaid life insurance policies are turned over to the states, so following step 1 or 2 outlined above should turn them up. But so often, the beneficiaries of life insurance policies don't even realize that their deceased loved one left them a policy. And, believe it or not, life insurance companies are not required to search out policy recipients. They typically wait for the claimants to come forward. Because this is a situation where you may have no idea where to start and where the benefit to you could be large, this is the one time I offer up a search service you have to pay a small fee for. You can hire a company called MIB Solutions to search for you. MIB is a private company that houses life insurance application information for much of the industry. It costs $75 to search. Go towww.policylocator.com for more information.

Welcome to the Great Florida Treasure Hunt.

The Department of Financial Services, Bureau of Unclaimed Property, holds unclaimed accounts valued at more than $1 billion, mostly from dormant accounts in financial institutions, insurance and utility companies, securities and trust holdings. Unclaimed Property also includes tangible property such as jewelry, coins, currency, stamps, historical items and other miscellaneous articles, from safe deposit boxes.

If you have ever lived in Florida, there's a chance we are holding unclaimed property for you. Please use the search form to the right to begin your search.

If you find a match and believe it is yours, you can print and complete a claim form and mail it to the department, or you can request a claim form be mailed to you. The claim form will list the documentation required to prove your claim.

There is no statute of limitations on making a claim. You have the right to claim your property any time at no cost.

Miley Cyrus ‘Can’t Stop’ With the Sexy Photos

Miley Cyrus's fans were no doubt excited when the singer released her eagerly anticipated new single "We Can't Stop" on Monday. But even those who aren't interested in her music were also probably excited – at the racy photos Cyrus tweeted to promote the tune.
Cyrus tweeted and Facebooked out a variety of increasingly sexy images up to her single's drop, all of which showed off plenty of her trim figure. In one, she sports a plunging one-piece bathing suit; another series features skintight white workout clothes and plenty of attitude (...and cleavage!).

That's just a sampling of the images Cyrus has been offering up to her fanbase. Check out her social media for more; including shots of her dancing with giant teddy bears and showing off a pair of super-short shorts from behind.
Cyrus has also been attracting gossip these days for her rumored breakup with fiance Liam Hemsworth; as well as her unlikely collaboration with rapper Snoop Lion, "Ashtrays and Heartbreaks." Cyrus's name did not appear in the credits for the song's video, causing many fans to raise an eyebrow or two at the omission.

Cybersecurity 2020 Student Essay Center

Cybersecurity 2020 Student Essay Contest
Are you a student with great ideas on the future of cyber security policy? Have you conducted research on how to measure the security impact of policies around the world? If so, read on for how you can win $5,000 cash for your research in this essay contest.

Overview

Cybersecurity is a policy priority for many governments but there is limited understanding of whether and how policy choices impact cyber risk outcomes. While many countries have made significant investments in the development and implementation of cybersecurity policy regimes, cybercriminals continue to make headway. With that in mind, policymakers are left to question the impact of their policy investments. Given this unknown, many policymakers have struggled to choose policies that will have the greatest positive outcome in managing cyber risk.
At the same time, the cyber ecosystem is undergoing tremendous change. The growth in Internet users across Asia, Africa, and Latin America; the proliferation of connected devices; and the explosive rise in Internet traffic are just a few of the mega-trends reshaping the Internet. Accordingly, regardless of today’s policy challenges and solutions, tomorrow’s landscape is likely to present new risks and opportunities.

What is the contest?

Microsoft is looking for original research about these cybersecurity policy challenges from university students at any stage in their educational development. Specifically, research should address one or both of the following questions; in both instances, preference will be given to responses that integrate quantitative analysis using publically-available cybersecurity data and research, such as the Microsoft Security Intelligence Report (SIR):
  1. Which cybersecurity policy choices have the most impact on cybersecurity outcomes and, based upon your answer, are there “actionable” recommendations for policymakers?
    • For example, have national-level regimes for securing government networks had a meaningful impact on cybersecurity? How might those regimes be improved?
    • Additionally, for example, can cybersecurity policies impact user-level security? And if so, how?
  2. Given the growth in people, devices, and data connected to the Internet, how should policymakers adapt current approaches, and are there elements missing from the current policy landscape that should be created, or existing instruments that should be deprecated?
    • For example, many global-level cybersecurity policy regimes were created when most Internet users were based on North America and Europe; will the rise in Internet users in Asia, Africa, and Latin America require changes to these regimes?
    • Additionally, for example, cybersecurity policies have been optimized for a desktop-centric world, where the computing machine, their operating systems, and often their users were fixed within a geography. What changes are necessary to accommodate a more mobile-based world?

What prizes are offered?

Microsoft will award cash prizes for the top three essays according to the judging criteria:
  • 1st place - $5,000
  • 2nd place - $3,000
  • 3rd place - $2,000

Where can I get more details?

For more information, please see the Official Rules.
Also, visit the Microsoft Global Security Strategy and Diplomacy website to learn how this team works collaboratively with governments, multilateral organizations, industry, and non-profit groups to enhance security across the cyberecosystem.

How do I enter?

To enter, send an email to cyber-essay@microsoft.com with your essay in Microsoft Word format and include the following information: first name, last name, email address, and school / university. Entries must be received by 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time (PT) on June 14, 2013.

See this iconic glass beach before it’s too late

Thanks to people who ignore the rules, Mendocino County's Glass Beach is rapidly fading away

13

There is a beach in Fort Bragg, California, that’s famous for the iridescent sea glass that shimmers on its shores. A dump until the 1960s, Glass Beach underwent massive cleanup projects in the late 1990s and early 2000s, but the glass from bottles and other items remained, worn smooth over time as it tumbled through the ocean.
Glass Beach is one of Mendocino County’s most popular tourist spots, as it’s one of the most abundant sources of sea glass in the world. But if you want to see this California treasure, go now, because it will likely be gone before we know it.
“Everybody is taking the glass and collecting it, so there’s not as much as there used to be,” said a clerk at Fort Bragg’s tourist information office.
In fact, even though removing sea glass from the beach is prohibited, rangers from California State Parks, which owns the beach, see people taking the smooth, pebble-like glass pieces home in Ziploc bags and buckets all the time. They try to stop people who fill up canisters as large as trashcans with sea glass, but there’s only so much they can prevent, they say.
The locals will tell you that the beach used to be covered in a foot of sea glass so smooth you could walk on it with bare feet, but these days there are sections of the 38-acre beach where glass is difficult to come by. Many say their only hope is to spread the word about the beach and what’s threatening it, crossing their fingers that people will begin minding the signs that say “glass collecting prohibited.”
For many, the destruction of Glass Beach is ironic, as it was the human penchant for destruction that created the beach in the first place. Without human waste, the beach would never have existed.
For now, Glass Beach remains—and here’s to hoping we humans can keep it that way.

While Glass Beach is the most popular spot for sea glass in Mendocino County, the area is actually home to two other sea glass beaches. They are both difficult to access, and one of them is surrounded by private land, which is why they are rarely visited. Photo by Travis Burke

DID ADAM HAVE THREE PARENTS?

News of advances in artificial human reproduction –- the treatment of infertility,  In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF), genetic enhancement, cloning -– have become commonplace.   Yet a headline over a recent news report caught my attention and aroused my curiosity:
IVF Creates Fetuses With Three Parents
The report, as rendered in the New Scientist issue of 18 October 2003, concerned “a woman that has become pregnant through a procedure that combines a controversial IVF method with one of the techniques used for cloning.”
The feat was performed by American scientific teams at a Chinese Medical Science University and concerned a woman who failed to conceive, even through IVF techniques, because her embryos stopped developing after two days.  The new procedure, using IVF (In-Vitro Fertilization) methods, first removed the woman’s egg, fertilized it with her husband’s sperm outside the womb, and then –- and that was the innovation –- obtained the eggs of another woman (“the donor”), emptied them of their genetic nuclei, re-injected into these donated eggs the fertilized material from the woman’s egg, and then re-implanted the manipulated eggs in wombs (the woman’s or that of a donor).
The key change in the previously-recorded procedures was that by using the donor’s egg even without its normal DNA, the DNA that comes only from the woman -- mitochondrial DNA or mtDNA –- has been preserved in the recombined egg.   By having the mtDNA not of the woman but that of the donor, conception and pregnancy took hold.
Thus, not only procedurally but also genetically, the fetus had three parents:  The woman, the male partner, and the female donor.
Now, Read the Sumerian Texts…
This report caught my attention because it sounds very much like the problems, and the solutions, encountered by Enki and Ninmah (later known as Ninti) when they engaged in genetic engineering to fashion “The Adam” -– the Earthling -– by upgrading the wild Homo erectus found in southeast Africa to become Homo sapiens (you and me).
The Sumerian creation texts -– yes, texts, not one but several –- have been reported by me in my first book, The 12th Planet, enlarged upon in Genesis Revisited, and then rendered in maximal detail in The Lost Book of Enki (2002). The methods used, the trial and error, the involvement of the young son of Enki Ningishzidda, are all there.   But after the successful fashioning of the male Adamu, the efforts to fashion a female counterpart failed.   It was then that Enki realized that the problem might be the re-implanting of the fertilized egg in the womb of an Earthling female.
“For a counterpart to Adamu to be fashioned, in the womb of an Anunnaki female conception is needed!” so did Enki say.
Success came after Enki’s spouse, Ninki, volunteered to have the recombined egg implanted in her womb.   The change, the recent experiments reveal, was that the source of the mtDNA was that of Ninki, an Anunnaki female, and not the Earthling mother.
Ti-Amat –- the biblical Eve -– thus had the DNA of three parents.
Once again, modern science corroborates the Sumerian knowledge.
And Speaking of Clay...
While writing the above article, another news item captured the media's (and my) attention.  Headlined MAYBE WE CAME FROM CLAY AFTER ALL, it reported (to quote the MSNBC News version) from Washington DC on October 23, 2003 that
Science backed up religion Thursday in a study that suggests life may have indeed sprung from clay -- just as many faiths teach.
A team at Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston said they had shown that materials in clay supported processes similar to those that may have given rise to life.
Specifically, a clay mixture called montmorillonite not only helps form little bags of fat and liquid, but helps cells use genetic material called RNA; that, in turn, is one of the key processes of life.
The report then quotes the scientists involved for additional details of the procedures based on the use of clay, and refers the readers to the relevant verses in Genesis.
In The 12th Planet I quoted the relevant Sumerian texts (that preceded the biblical tale by several millennia) that refer to the use of clay.  In the The Lost Book of Enki the repeated failures to obtain a non-defective newborn are described, with success coming only after Enki realized that
Perchance the shortfall is not in the admixture...
Perchance neither in the female's oval
nor in the essences is the hindrance --
Of what the Earth itself is fashioned,
perchance that is what is missing?
And success in obtaining the perfect model of Adamu came after Ninmah followed his instructions and instead of combining the genes in a crystal vessel, it was done in a vessel made of the CLAY OF THE EARTH.  (The Lost Book of Enki, page 136).
In this detail too, modern science is following the "Technologies of the gods."

Mermaids: Nonsense or Nuisance?

Animal Planet has raised quite a furor over its airing of the "speculative" documentary "Mermaids: The New Evidence." Capping its annual Monster Week, a network once known for safari shows and puppy bowls is turning over increasing amounts of its broadcast time to cryptozoology shows like "Lost Tapes," "Dragons: A Fantasy Made Real," and "Finding Bigfoot".
In fact, "Finding Bigfoot" was at the center of another, similar, controversy reported last year by Entertainment Weekly as TV critics turned skeptics, forced Animal Planet president Marjorie Kaplan to offer a vague defense of the show as "an exploration of the secret corners of the planet," since it lacks anything approaching hard evidence.

Should They Have Aired It?

Animal Planet has 3.6 million reasons (as in viewers!) why they should've.
There's really nothing wrong with using actors to re-enact scenes for a documentary. But where is the line? "Unsolved Mysteries" gives a framework for its actors to pretend they were criminals, but actors on "Mermaids" pretend they're scientists with nothing but a tiny caveat in the credits to suggest it's anything but 100% fact.
Animal Planet's first "Mermaids" installment, "Mermaids: The Body Found," garnered 3.4 million views during its U.S. telecast premiere on Sunday, May 27, 2012. After the airing, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration had to release an official statement putting it, in unequivocal terms, "No evidence of aquatic humanoids has ever been found." Marine biologist David Shiffman wrote an article for Slate explaining why we should stop worrying about mythical sea life and focus on the damage being done to the sea life we know exists. He talks about fisheries where up to 90 percent of a catch is made up of unintended victims. Not the commercial fish, but "endangered sea turtles and sea birds as well as marine mammals."

So, do mermaids exist?

Science says no. But science is a process of discovery. And, as this tweet's skepticism of skepticism suggests:
There's no reason not to believe that they might.
But science is also pretty good at predicting. And just because we haven't laid eyes on 90% of the ocean, doesn't mean we don't have a pretty good idea of what's going on down there. Just because you haven't been to your tool shed in a month doesn't make it any more likely that Bigfoot's decided to take up residence in there.
Despite this, the fascination with mermaids persists, as the comments on articles like these attest. And why not? It fills the unknown depths of the ocean with hope and wonder rather than fear. Kaplan isn't exaggerating when she says, "These extraordinary television specials have electrified, challenged, and entertained television audiences."
Maybe all these numbers mean is we need a little more mystery. It's been a while since the "X-Files" sent us off to search the skies. How about, instead of a faux doc, we make a show featuring two charismatic FBI agents uncovering the "truth" about mermaids on a weekly basis? Of course, the two attractive agents would be constantly getting soaked and spending most of the episodes half-naked waiting for their clothes to dry. That ought to be enough to blow the ratings numbers for "Mermaids" — ahem — out of the water.
